Pipeline Condition Assessment

Pipeline Condition Assessment

Extend the safe operating life of critical distribution and transmission main assets.

Wholesale replacement of aging water mains is not just cost-prohibitive - it's unnecessary in many cases. Many water mains (distribution and transmission) now serving major cities were installed between 50 to 100 years ago, and today's budget-strapped municipalities, water utilities, and pipeline operators simply cannot afford the millions of dollars required to replace them. Performing water main condition assessments and replacing only structurally compromised pipeline sections enables water utilities to maximize the reliable operating life of existing assets, and drastically reduce overall pipeline capital and operating costs.

Wachs Water Services offers proven condition assessment services for all diameters of water main and materials, including prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP), cast iron, ductile iron, plastic, steel, and asbestos.

Benefits of pipeline condition assessment:

  • Safely extend the operating life of distribution and transmission mains
  • Reduce water main breaks and associated water damage
  • Minimize cost and ensure quality of large-scale lining projects
  • Identify installation defects which may not be immediately evident
  • Extend budget investments by strategically rehabilitating and replacing individual pipe sections
  • Protect water main assets and property by stopping leaks
  • Decrease water production and distribution costs by stopping non revenue water loss
  • Understand the true condition and value of buried assets
  • Accurate and tangible data for utility water GIS systems allows for comparison of pipe degradation over time

Wachs Water Services water main condition assessment solutions:

  Investigator
The Investigator™ can be launched through fire hydrants, pressure fittings, air valves, gate valves and flow meter fittings for combined video and leak inspections of water mains sized 3 to 24 inches.

  LDS1000
The LDS1000™ is an advanced condition assessment technology for large diameter transmission mains. The platform technology incorporates a state of the art, high quality video technology, ultra-high response hydrophone sensor and mapping/tracking capabilities for precise inspections.

High Quality Video of Pressurized Water Mains
Visually inspect pipe interior surfaces while the pipe remains in-service and pressurized. Using a high quality video output that requires no post-processing, real-time video inspection enables you to immediately spot tuberculation and other potential problems.

  Water Main Leak Detection
Highly trained Wachs Water Services field technicians have more than a decade of experience with multiple technologies and techniques for water main leak detection, and have inspected over 6,000 miles of small and large diameter water mains for leaks.

  Failed Hydrostatic Pressure Tests
Contractors and utilities across North America are discovering the advantages and cost-effectiveness of using the LDS1000™ and Investigator™ systems to quickly and accurately find the smallest leaks within new pipelines.

  Pressure Transient Monitoring
Wachs Water Services offers proven transient pressure monitoring services for water pipeline operators that provide detailed information about pressure changes within the line, called "surges" or "water hammers". These events can exceed the structural capabilities of the water main and increase the likelihood of a rupture. A cost effective way to analyze system operation and extend the life of critical pipeline assets, TP-1 employs a system of dynamic pressure transducers and digital technologies to monitor a water main for a short or an indefinite period of time.

  Pipeline Locating and Mapping
Wachs Water Services is the trusted provider of water distribution system mapping for water mains and data integration services. We offer unique solutions, such as the Investigator™ and LDS1000™ systems, capable of inspecting PVC pipelines from inside a pipeline while it remains in service --the only truly reliable way to map PVC networks.

  GIS Data Capture and Integration
Data integration services from Wachs Water Services deliver a "one-stop-shop" by preparing and integrating the pipe condition assessment data for use with water utility GIS (geographic information systems) geospatial mapping and database software that shows locations of specific assets and routes of pipelines, and CMMS (computerized maintenance management systems) work-order management technologies used to monitor the dynamic operational status of the assets within the water distribution system.
